Fellowship in IDSA is one of the highest honors in the field of infectious diseases. Avian Influenza A(H5N1) Avian influenza A(H5N1), or bird flu, is a disease caused by infection with avian influenza type A viruses. Bird flu is widespread in wild birds worldwide, and the viruses that cause it can also infect other animals, including poultry, and most recently, dairy cows in the U.S. While avian flu viruses do not normally infect people, sporadic human infections have occurred around the world.
